How are the calories estimated?
The tool uses the MET (metabolic equivalent) model: calories ≈ MET × your body mass in kilograms × hours riding. The MET rises with speed because faster riding is harder work — an easy 9 mph spin is around 4 METs, a brisk 16 mph pace over 12. Multiply by your weight and the time the ride takes, and you get the estimate.
Does an e-bike still burn calories?
Yes — just fewer than an analogue bike, because the motor shares the load. Studies consistently show e-bike commuters still reach a moderate-intensity effort and get real cardiovascular exercise, especially over hills and longer distances they wouldn't otherwise ride. This calculator scales the burn down by your assist level: none burns the most, Turbo the least, with Eco and Normal in between.
Why does the assist level change the number so much?
The more the motor contributes, the less your legs do, so your body burns less. On heavy assist you might burn a little over half what you would unpowered at the same speed.
