How is charge time worked out?

A charger's power in watts is its voltage times its current (for example 42 V × 2 A = 84 W). The energy you need to put back is the pack's watt-hour shortfall from its current level to full, plus a little extra lost as heat — charging is typically 85-95% efficient. Divide the energy needed by the charger's power and you get the time. A 500 Wh pack on an 84 W charger from empty is roughly six to seven hours.

Why does the last bit take longer than the estimate?

Lithium batteries charge fast up to about 80%, then the charger deliberately slows down (tapers) to protect the cells for the final stretch to 100%. This tool gives a linear estimate, so a top-up to completely full usually runs a little longer than the figure shown. If you only need 80% for a commute, you'll often be ready sooner than predicted.

How much does a charge cost?

Almost nothing. The cost is the energy drawn from the wall — the pack's kilowatt-hours divided by charging efficiency — times your electricity price. A 500 Wh pack is half a kilowatt-hour, so even at $0.30/kWh a full charge is well under 20 cents. Over a year that is a rounding error next to a tank of fuel, which is a big part of why commuting by e-bike is so cheap.

Can I use a faster charger to cut the time?

A higher-amp charger does charge faster, but only use one your battery and its BMS are rated for — pushing more current than the pack is designed for generates heat and shortens its life. Check the manufacturer's maximum charge current before upgrading, and prefer charging at room temperature. This calculator shows the trade-off: double the amps roughly halves the time.
