The #Ride5 Challenge, part of the Love to Ride Bike Month 2025, aims to encourage residents across Warwickshire to ride at least five miles during May and clock up points for their workplace. The challenge is part of a broader effort to promote active travel as a viable alternative to car travel, with the ultimate goal of reducing our environmental impact and improving public health.
According to Stephen Rumble, WCC’s transport spokesperson, the benefits of active travel, particularly cycling, are numerous. Not only can it reduce vehicle costs for fuel and maintenance, but it also improves physical and mental wellbeing, and benefits the environment. The #Ride5 Challenge encourages individuals to ride at least five miles during May in order to clock up points for their workplace and be in with a chance of winning prizes.

“The benefits of active travel, particularly travelling by bike, are huge, both for the individual and for our wider environment,” said Stephen Rumble. “For residents looking to reduce vehicle costs for fuel and maintenance, improve physical and mental wellbeing while also benefiting the environment, then there is no better time than now to get on those bikes.”
Replacing Short Journeys with Cycling
According to Stephen Rumble, it’s often the short journeys – less than five miles – which have the greatest negative impact on the environment and finances. However, these are also the easiest ones to replace with a cycling alternative, whether it be for the school pick-up, the commute to work or to pop into town for shopping and socialising.
Example | Journey Details | Cycling Alternative |
1 | School pick-up from house to school | Ride to school instead of driving |
2 | Commute to work by car | Ride to work by bike |
3 | Pick up groceries from local shop | Walk or ride bike to the shop instead of driving |
By replacing these short journeys with a cycling alternative, individuals can make a significant impact on reducing their environmental impact and improving their physical and mental wellbeing.
