The launch of Travel Actively Cumbria, a website created by Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council, marked an exciting milestone in the promotion of active travel in Cumbria. This initiative aims to encourage residents to adopt more active modes of transport, such as walking, cycling, and wheeling, to improve their health, wellbeing, and the environment.
The website features a range of innovative tools and resources, including a journey planner, tips on how to start active travel, news and events, and stories from residents. It also provides users with access to local bike maintenance services, allowing them to keep their bikes in good condition and ride safely.
Events to Celebrate the Launch
The launch of the website was celebrated at two events in Carlisle and Barrow. In Barrow, the event was held outside the Town Hall and the Forum, where visitors could enjoy free bike servicing and repairs courtesy of volunteers from Dr Bike Cycle Maintenance. A fleet of electric bikes was also made available for trial, allowing people to experience the benefits of cycling firsthand.
- A group walk around the town centre was organized, providing an opportunity for attendees to explore the local area on foot.
- The Active Cumbria team were present to discuss the new website and the benefits of active travel.
- Councillor John Murray, cabinet member for transport and regulatory services at Westmorland and Furness Council, was on hand to talk about the website and the councils’ plans for promoting active travel.
At the Carlisle event, Councillor Denise Rollo, executive member for sustainable, resilient, and connected places, emphasized the importance of incorporating physical activity into daily life. She highlighted the benefits of active travel, including improved health, reduced costs, and a positive impact on the environment.
“I’m really pleased with the launch of this great new website. Increasing levels of physical inactivity and weight-related health issues are a real concern for us, and one of the best ways to stay active is to incorporate it into your daily lives. It’s good for your health, your wallet, and it’s better for the environment.”
The councils in Cumbria have set a target to have half of all journeys in the county’s towns and city made by walking, wheeling, and cycling by 2030. The website is an essential tool in achieving this goal, providing residents with the information and inspiration they need to make active travel a habit.
Target Year | Journeys by Active Travel | Current Level of Active Travel |
2030 | Half of all journeys | Currently around 10% of journeys |
The website is a collaboration between Active Cumbria, Cumberland Council, and Westmorland and Furness Council, with taxpayer funding allocated by the Government. It is available to visit at www.travelactively.co.uk.
